Spectrum is proud to announce August’s Student of the Month: veteran performer, Patty Van Savage!
“Don’t ever forget that you can accomplish great things with hard work.” – Patty Van Savage
Patty has been performing in the Rochester area for sixteen years. She first began performing when she joined a theatre group led by Spectrum instructor J.P. Simpson. After that, she got involved with Artists Unlimited, a theatre organization that’s been providing “opportunities for individuals with physical and/or developmental disabilities to participate in the performing arts” for over 10 years in the Rochester area. You may have seen her recently in Artists Unlimited’s June 2017 Summer Concert, which nearly filled the 1,964-seat Kodak Center For Performing Arts. Her creative journey then brought her here to Spectrum Creative Arts, where she currently studies the gamut of the creative arts: voice, piano, guitar, and dance, with board-certified music therapists Sheralyn Fenton, Shelby Dahl, and Spectrum Director Wade Richards.

Patty has made a lot of memories onstage throughout her years as a performer, but one stands out as a favorite: at a Halloween recital at Hochstein School of Music under the direction of Wade Richards, Patty sang “Some Day My Prince Will Come” dressed as her favorite princess, Snow White. When asked about her greatest obstacle as an artist, she noted that when she first started singing, people sometimes had difficulty understanding her words. But after years of music therapy with Wade, doing lots of breathing and reading exercises, she now sings with great clarity and audiences love her energy-packed performances.

Always working hard and challenging herself to go one step further, Patty has been preparing all Summer for a solo recital. On Wednesday August 30 at 6 p.m. here at Spectrum Creative Arts, Patty will give a solo performance featuring songs like “Elvira,” “Forever Young,” and “Ten Minutes Ago” from Cinderella on guitar, as well as “Always On My Mind,” “I Gotta Be Me,” and “Close To You” on keyboard. In addition to playing the guitar and keyboard, this multi-talented star will sing her rendition of the classic “Stand By Me.” But wait — there’s more! Patty’s instructors Wade and Shelby will be featured in a debut performance of an original Patty Van Savage composition entitled “Lonely World.”
From the whole team at Spectrum Creative Arts, congratulations on all of your hard work, Patty! You are an inspiration to artists of all ages and all abilities.
